Tenafly, NJ (October 22, 2024) – One person was killed in a crash in Tenafly on Monday, October 21, that involved a tractor-trailer and a garbage truck.
On Monday at about 6:55 a.m., the Tenafly Police Department received a report of a serious motor vehicle crash on County Road just north of the intersection of Prospect Terrace. Responding officers found a crash scene involving a private sanitation truck and a tractor-trailer in the northbound lane of County Road.
According to the Tenafly Police Department, based on evidence and witness accounts, it appears that the sanitation truck was parked along the northbound curb with one worker in the roadway collecting trash from area residences. Officers determined that the tractor-trailer was traveling northbound and crashed into the back of the garbage truck as the sanitation worker was transferring garbage into the truck.
The worker, who has since been identified as a 23-year-old man from North Arlington, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Tenafly Police Department. The driver of the garbage truck, a 54-year-old man from North Arlington, and another employee, a 69-year-old man from Union City, were brought to Englewood Health Medical Center for evaluation.
Additionally, the driver of the tractor-trailer, a 53-year-old man from Pennsylvania, remained on the scene and was later brought to the hospital for evaluation. The County Road remained closed for several hours for investigation, according to the Tenafly Police Department. No summonses were issued at the scene, but the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
We offer our deepest condolences to the deceased man’s family members. Our thoughts are extended to the injured victims and their loved ones. We hope for their full recovery.
