Philadelphia, PA (July 30, 2023) – On Thursday night, July 27, an unmanned SEPTA trolley hit a historic house and another vehicle at the intersection of Island Avenue and Woodland Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia.
The accident was recorded on local surveillance footage. Per reports from authorities, the trolley went off the rails, collided with an SUV, and struck the stone front of the historic Blue Bell Inn, which has been on the corner since 1766.
The owner and her pet, who were in the building at this time, were able to escape without injuries. The trolley was empty, but one of the SEPTA mechanics was injured and hospitalized. Two occupants in the SUV also sustained injuries requiring transfer to a local medical center.
The Safety System and Transit Police of SEPTA are looking into the incident, along with officers from the Philadelphia Police Department.
