Philadelphia, PA (August 18, 2024) – A three-car collision that resulted in the death of one individual caused the closure of Kelly Drive for several hours on Thursday afternoon, and officers released further details in connection with the crash on Friday, August 16.
According to the police, the collision occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 15, when the driver of a black Nissan Altima reportedly attempted to make an illegal left turn in order to bypass Kelly Drive and proceed to Reservoir Drive, hitting another vehicle. A 41-year-old man was transported to Temple Hospital, where he was declared deceased.

The 44-year-old driver of the Altima was transported to Presbyterian Hospital with minor injuries. Police also reported that five additional individuals sustained injuries as a consequence of the collision. However, none of these injuries were considered life-threatening. The Philadelphia Police Department’s Crash Investigation Division is still looking into the events leading up to the accident. Officers added that charges are pending at this time, though no further details have been released in the interim.
We extend our deepest condolences to the deceased victim’s loved ones. Our thoughts go out to the injured victims and their families in hopes of their complete recovery.
Major Car Accidents in Philadelphia
The vast majority of people automatically associate deadly car accidents with those that occur at high speeds on the highway. However, this is not always the case. According to research conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the number of people killed in car accidents on typical city streets has risen dramatically in recent years.

Unfortunately, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia are not immune to this trend. More than 1,000 people were killed in road accidents throughout Pennsylvania over one recent, as was reported by the state’s transportation agency, showing that this grim trend is an unfortunate reality in our state. Moreover, these crashes range from simple fender benders to devastating multi-car pileups and are even worse when they involve large trucks. Some of the most common causes of crashes reported in the Commonwealth include but are not limited to the following:
- Hitting a building, stationary item, or parked vehicle.
- Crashing into another vehicle at an angle (often while merging or running a red light).
- Back-to-back or rear-end collisions.

Even if you are one of the safest drivers around, you will probably be involved in a car accident at some time in your life due to the rising frequency of crashes. Because of this, you should prepare for an accident by familiarizing yourself in advance with the steps you need to take to protect yourself legally and financially. Adding insult to injury, if a victim is left unable to work as a result of injuries sustained in a vehicle accident, the at-fault driver’s insurance company may attempt to avoid paying for the policyholder’s long-term care, as well as lost income and future earnings.
