Newark, NJ (May 9, 2023) – Per a news release provided by Morris County prosecutors, a Newark garbage truck driver was charged with reckless vehicular homicide in connection with a deadly accident that occurred on Route 23 in Pequannock on Monday, May 8.
The incident occurred around 5:00 a.m. at Alexander Avenue from Route 23 northbound in Pequannock Township. Early reports from the scene indicated that a man driving a 2020 Chevy Traverse and stopped at a red light allegedly got hit from behind by a garbage truck.
The Chevy overheated and burst into flames shortly thereafter. According to authorities, surveillance footage allegedly shows that the truck driver, a 45-year-old male, was texting at the moment of the collision.
The truck driver and a bystander pulled the unconscious Chevy driver, an identified male, out of the vehicle before police arrived. Despite the efforts of patrol officers and medical staff, the victim was pronounced dead at the site.
The victim’s identity remains unknown, though the suspect is being held in custody. An investigation is still active in the interim.
Our deepest condolences are extended to the deceased man’s family.
