Deaths Caused By New Jersey Motor Vehicle Accidents
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic’s ramifications, such as fewer motorists on our state’s roadways, almost 700 individuals died in traffic crashes in New Jersey in 2021, the highest number since 2007 and an increase for the third year in a row.
According to statistics from the State Police, close to 692 persons died in New Jersey auto accidents during the prior year, approximately 100 more than the figure that was recorded by authorities in 2020.
The number of pedestrians killed in incidents grew to 218 last year, up from 79 in 2020, and 23 bicyclists perished in collisions last year, up from 5 in 2020.
Unfortunately, these spikes in roadway mortality are similar to national trends identified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration when it released the year’s first-half fatality data. In reality, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that over 20,150 persons died in motor vehicle accidents in the first half of 2021 alone. This is an almost 19 percent increase over the same time period in 2020, and it is also a 15-year high.
