East Windsor, NJ (November 13, 2024) – A woman was killed and another person injured after they were hit by a 94-year-old driver backing out of a parking spot at a shopping center in East Windsor, officials said on Wednesday, November 13.
The pedestrians were struck as they walked through the parking lot in the Town Center Plaza on Route 130 northbound at about 5:35 p.m., police said in a statement Wednesday. The driver, a Monroe resident, mistakenly hit the gas and lost control of his mid-sized vehicle before it struck the pedestrians and another parked car, police added.
A 68-year-old woman from Princeton was brought to an area hospital, where she died of her injuries days later. Her relative who was with her, a 39-year-old Princeton man, was treated for injuries police said were not considered life-threatening. Police issued the motorist a summons for careless driving. However, no further details were released as Branchburg PD officers confirmed that the crash remained under investigation. In the interim, officers asked any witnesses to come forward right away.
We offer our sincere condolences to the deceased woman’s family. Our thoughts are also with the injured victim in hopes of his full recovery.
Pedestrian Deaths in New Jersey
Per the most recent available accident statistics, a pedestrian was killed in a traffic collision in New Jersey 27% of the time over the last year alone. Tragically, any pedestrian in New Jersey who is out for a stroll risks being in a collision, but some age groups see more traffic-related fatalities than others. For instance, adults over 65 make up about 20% of all pedestrian accident fatalities. Moreover, New Jersey ranked among the deadliest states for pedestrians.
Unfortunately, the busy streets in New Jersey threaten pedestrians’ safety, so the state has passed several laws that drivers must abide by to keep pedestrians safe. Drivers who break these prohibitions may be subject to civil and criminal penalties, particularly if a pedestrian is hurt. Moreover, motorists in New Jersey have a duty of care to pedestrians, and when they fail to uphold this civil responsibility to others, it thus follows that they may be held civilly accountable.
