Philadelphia, PA (April 27, 2023) – Police believe a stolen vehicle caused a crash that involved a SEPTA bus and a minivan parked outside a bank in Northeast Philadelphia late Wednesday evening, April 26.
Officers responded to the scene near Martins Mill Road in the Lawndale area at around 1:30 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered a bus had crashed into a PNC Bank branch, along with a stolen Hyundai sedan and a minivan that had crashed into the back of the bank.
A man in his twenties thought to be the suspect who stole the Hyundai, escaped into a Volkswagen that was trailing the Hyundai.
The Volkswagen drove away, but the front-seat passenger, an 18-year-old male, was left behind. The cops stated the passenger was unresponsive and had suffered significant head injuries. He was in critical condition when he arrived at the hospital.
The minivan’s driver, a 31-year-old man, was also trapped inside his vehicle. The driver’s door had to be removed before firefighters could reach the victim.
The minivan driver was said to be in stable condition at an area medical center.
The three riders aboard the SEPTA bus exited the vehicle and left. The police claimed they did not stay to act as witnesses. The SEPTA bus driver’s status is described as “stable” after he was also rushed to the hospital.
No further details have been released in the interim, though officers continue to investigate the incident.
